Re-evaluation of the Exemption for Heptachlor Sally Shaver U.S. Environmental Protection Agency LRTAP POPs Task Force Meeting March 1, 2004 The Hague, The Netherlands

Protocol Requirement No uses allowed, except for use by certified personnel for the control of fire ants in closed industrial electrical junction boxes. Such use shall be re-evaluated under this Protocol no later than two years after the date of entry into force.

Heptachlor Production & Use in UNECE Region No current production Use USA requested electrical junction box use exemption during negotiations Since then, USA canceled this use USA now has registered alternatives for this use

Global Heptachlor Production & Use –Stockholm Convention Not allowed under the Convention Use exemptions No Party has submitted a registration to UNEP to use heptachlor (as of Feb 2004)

Re-evaluation The Task Force on POP: (a) Wishes to notify Parties to the LRTAP POPs Protocol that the United States has indicated that it no longer needs the heptachlor exemption for the control of fire ants in closed industrial electrical junction boxes; and, (b) Is not aware of any country that has indicated a need for the exemption.
