Around the World with Jerrie and Joan A PBL Project for elementary school students Christopher Scaptura Garfield ES

Geraldine Mock The first woman to fly solo around the world. Jerrie completed her flight in 1964. Jerrie was an Ohio housewife, and a college- trained aeronautical engineer.

Joan Merriam Smith The second woman to fly solo around the world. Joan was a professional pilot who dreamt of flying the same around-the-world route attempted by her hero, Amelia Earhart.

ASK: How can we, as game designers, create a board game based on the around- the-world flights of Geraldine Mock and Joan Merriam Smith?

What do we NEED TO KNOW? Questions Answers

IMAGINE What are some solutions? Brainstorm ideas. Choose the best one. Independently, take a few minutes to come up with two ideas of what your game should be like and what information should be included in your project. Draw and label your ideas in your STEAM journal.

Find out more about Jerrie, joan, and their airplanes! Use these websites to investigate their around-the-world flights and aircraft: https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/cessna-180 https://airandspace.si.edu/collection-objects/piper-pa-23-apache https://airandspace.si.edu/explore-and-learn/topics/women-in- aviation/mock.cfm http://www.airspacemag.com/history-of-flight/twenty-seven-years- after-amelia-earhart-tried-geraldine-mock-flew-solo-around-world- 180950144/?no-ist

PLAN Draw a diagram. Make a list of materials you will need. Meet with your partners. Discuss your ideas from the “Imagine” phase of the project. Work with your partners to create a plan. Illustrate and label your plan in your STEAM journal. Create a list of materials you will need.

Create & test Create and build a prototype. Test and evaluate.

Improve What works? What doesn’t? Modify your design to make it better. Repeat this step.

Example:
