Handling of research material Group 3: Leena Grandell, Suman Mehta, Nikolaos Simisiroglou, Shunguo Wang and Jacob Winding

Ethical Problem The requirement for public access, openness and transparency is an issue in our research field, moreover the proper routines for documentation of the methodologies are not always followed. Conflicts Protect private funding companies or funding agencies Privacy of individuals (healthcare)

Interest considerations and various types of research The distinction is important, as different regulations apply in various cases. Example: In the healthcare research individual identities are protected more by law than in Energy related research

Four concepts Secrecy Professional secrecy Terms and conditions in agreements Professional secrecy Psychologist, Doctor, Priest and… Anonymizing or de-identifying Healthcare sector, company data Confidentiality Non Disclosure Agreement Explain difference between anonymizing and confidentiality

What can researchers promise? Should not promise more than can deliver! Possible time considerations Financial cost Largely due to being poorly informed of applicable rules or because they confuse the four concepts discussed before.

Conclusions a researcher cannot promise that no one outside the research group will ever have access to the material or information collected in the course of the study. Research costs money, so it is also in society’s interest that collected material can be used as much as possible in research. But the researches should not deviate from the rules acts and declarations involved with the project.
