Lesson 1: Define based on the undefined!

LESSON OBJECTIVES: AFTER THIS PRESENTATIN STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO: Identify the three undefined terms in Geometry; a point, a line and a plane. Define the following five terms: circle, angle, perpendicular line, parallel lines and line segment.

Introduction:

Materials: Cutout segments, arrowheads and arcs. Tape. Cutout upper and lower case letters. Camera. Project: Students will walk around in the classroom looking for defined and undefined terms. Students will use materials to mark the figures of the terms in the lesson and identify their components. Students will take pictures of the marked figures to make their own journals.

Exploring the “undefined”! What do we mean by “Undefined” in the title “undefined terms” ? What are they and Why are they called “Undefined”?

Watch the following video: Then, refer to your guided notes to answer the questions.

So, What does the word “undefined” in the undefined terms mean?!

Building on the “Undefined” terms Following Euclid’s steps, every thing in Geometry (such as proofs) must be defined and follow a logical sequence to reach the final conclusion. We learn about the undefined terms to use them as a base to define other terms in Geometry.

What is an angle?! A set of points that is the union of rays having the same endpoint. A ray is a set of points on a line extending from one endpoint. To name an angle: use three points and the vertex is always in the middle. Ex.: < ABC

What is a line segment? A set of points consisting of 2 points on a line, called endpoints, and all the points in between the endpoints. To name the line segment: use the endpoints. Ex.: TL

Do you remember the definition of perpendicular lines? Perpendicular lines are two lines whose crossing results in congruent angles at the point of intersection.

Parallel lines Parallel lines are lines in a plane that do not intersect in a point.

What is a circle?! A circle is the set of all points in a plane that are at fixed distance (r) from a certain point called the center.
