April 25, 2018 SIT AT TABLE IN THE MIDDLE AND WHERE YOU WILL BE ACADEMICALLY SUSCCESSFUL Objectives: * Determine pertinent evidence that is based on and answer the research question (finding the RIGHT evidence – not just any evidence). * Recognize & develop an understanding of how to develop a strong thesis BASED ON THE EVIDENCE you have collected in your research. Homework: 4/26: Note (24) & Source (6) Cards – AND – Source Analysis (if needed-on Library website “Source Evaluation”) If electronic cards you MUST have a print out/hard copy 4/27: TRS-Box B 4/30: GCP Outline (MLA Format-hard copy & tii) AND TRS-Boxes C & D Turn In: None Take Out: TRS Sheet (yellow) Note/Source Cards Agenda: *Good Evidence *Developing a thesis *Work time

Thinking about turning research into a thesis Today we will work on organizing our research Putting categories/subjects on your note cards… AND… Discovering our thesis statement that is due Friday Raise your hand if you need help at any point in the process… Mr. Doran or myself can help! Help each other! If you already have a good idea of where you’re going, look at someone else’s research with them. Do you see something they don’t? Don’t be afraid to ask someone to look at some of your research if you can’t see a pattern.

Thinking about turning research into a thesis First: What is your research telling you? Look at your research question. (Box A on your yellow sheet) Now, look at the evidence you gathered so far. Do you see the answer? If yes: write it down! If no: What do you see? It’s possible your research took you in a different direction and you need to adjust your research question to match the answer you found.

Thinking about turning research into a thesis Second: Let’s get organized! Do you already have some different categories in your head? If yes: Write them down and start organizing your notecards into each category. Feel free to add categories! Try to not to have more than 3 or 4. Keep them slightly broad. See next slide as to where to put these… If no: Look at your research. Do you see some similarities? Are some of your notecards talking about a similar idea? Suggestions of what to look for: Politics *Economics People *Events Human/Society effects *Reactions/Responses to Crisis Countries/regions *Causes/Consequences or Results

Thinking about turning research into a thesis Third: Forming your thesis Now that you have organized your research and figured out what it’s telling you, let’s write a thesis! Let’s find each part. What: This is the answer you came up with! The basic, simplest answer to your research question. How: Look at your categories. Let’s stick to list thesis mode today. Just list them out! So what: This will look different based on your research question. Possibilities: If you are looking at the causes of your crisis, then your so what is that it leads to your crisis!! If you are looking at impact, what did it lead to? What was the result? What did it to the people? The region? The economy? The Politics/stability?

If you found your thesis, Congratulations If you found your thesis, Congratulations! Write it in Box B on your TRS (yellow) and you are ready for Friday. OR you can turn it in ASAP to get feedback Now review the General MLA Outline instructions on the website under the 9th Global Conflict Project tab If you are not quite there yet, That’s OK! Write down what you do see and look at it again tonight. Perhaps you’ve discovered a gap in your research and need to do some more research before turning in your cards. Perhaps you need to rework your research question and look at a different angle. Perhaps you need to look at your evidence with someone else to see the bigger picture or come see Mrs. Maners or Mr. Doran.
