The English Establish 13 Colonies 1585 - 1732 Learning Objective: What were some of the common ideals that link the Mayflower Compact, the establishment of the House of Burgesses, and town meetings?

House Of Burgesses The English kings who ruled the 13 original colonies reserved the right to decide the fate of their colonies as well, but not alone. The colonists drew upon their claims to traditional English rights and insisted on raising their own representative assemblies. Such was the case with the VIRGINIA HOUSE OF BURGESSES, the first popularly elected legislature in the New World. http://www.beyondbooks.com

The first legislature anywhere in the English colonies in America was in Virginia. This was the House of Burgesses, and it first met on July 30, 1619, at a church in Jamestown. Its first order of business was to set a minimum price for the sale of tobacco. http://www.socialstudiesforkids.com/articles/ushistory/houseofburgesses.htm
