Profile of an Active Shooter An individual who is engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms(s) and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims. Metro North Security Department Active Shooter Events If an Active Shooter is in your vicinity, you must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with the situation. You have three options: RUN HIDE FIGHT Metro North Security Department

Metro North Security Department Option 1: RUN Have an escape route and plan in mind. Leave belongings behind. Not worth your life. Keep your hands visible. Evacuate regardless of whether others agree to follow. Prevent others from entering an area where the active shooter may be. Call 911 when you are safe. Metro North Security Department

Metro North Security Department Option 2: HIDE Identify opportunities for cover and concealment Hide out of shooter’s view. Look for cover and concealment. Practice. Block entry to your hiding place. Lock doors. Barricade doors with furniture etc. Silence your cell phone and any other electronic devices. Metro North Security Department

Metro North Security Department Option 3: FIGHT Fight as a last resort and only when your life is in imminent danger. When you do fight, commit fully to your actions. Be as aggressive as possible. Don’t stop. Ambush shooter. Use surprise. Throw items. Attempt to incapacitate shooter. Eyes, face, etc. Improvise weapons. Fire extinguishers etc. Metro North Security Department

Contacting Law Enforcement Call law enforcement when it is safe to do so. Information to provide to 911 operators: Location of the active shooter. Number of active shooters. Physical description of shooters. Number and type of weapons shooter has. Number of victims at location. Metro North Security Department

When Law Enforcement Arrives Remain calm and follow instructions. Avoid quick movements toward officers, such as holding on to them for safety. Do not ask questions when evacuating. Avoid pointing or yelling. Keep hands visible at all times. Drop any items in your hands (coats, bags) Keep your fingers spread. Metro North Security Department

Metro North Security Department The first officers to arrive on scene will not stop to help the injured. Expect rescue teams to follow initial officers. These rescue teams will treat and remove the injured. Metro North Security Department

Safe Location Procedures Once you have reached a safe location, you likely will be held in that area by law enforcement until the situation is under control and all witnesses have been identified and questioned. Do not leave the area until law enforcement authorities have instructed you to do so. Metro North Security Department
