Tuskegee syphilis Study Katie Housiaux

Syphilis Sutdy Clinical study from 1932-1972 where they monitored untreated syphilis in poor black men. The study used 600 African-American sharecroppers. 399 were already infected with syphilis. 201 were not infected. The men were not told that they had a disease but they were given free medical care, free meals, and free burial insurance. They never knew that they had it and they were never treated for it.

Syphilis Study The study greatly affected the trust that black people had towards the government. They believed that the government was to blame for the HIV/AIDS outbreak. Bill Clinton’s apology was, “What was done cannot be undone. But we can end the silence. We can stop turning our heads away. We can look at you in the eye and finally say on behalf of the American people, what the United States government did was shameful, and I am sorry ... To our African American citizens, I am sorry that your federal government orchestrated a study so clearly racist."
