What is the Second Amendment? What does this mean? A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. Though it has been interpreted for a very long time that this amendment means any human is allowed to own a gun the actual meaning holds more value in the idea that the people have a right to "bear arms" if necessary to protect their state/country

District of Columbia V. Heller The district of Columbia V. Heller was a landmark case in which the Supreme Court of the United States held in a 5-4 decision that the second amendment to the United States Constitution applies to the protection of individual rights to possess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.

District court February 2003: the six residents of Washington DC; Shelly Parker, Tom G Palmer, Gillan St Lawrence, Tracy Hansen, George Lyon , and Dick Anthony Heller filed a lawsuit in the District Court for the District of Columbia, challenging the Firearms Control Regulations Act of 1975. This act restricted residents from owning handguns, excluding those already in registration prior to 1975 and those possessed by active and retired law-enforcement officers. The act also required that all firearms, including rifles and shotguns, be unloaded and disassembled or bound by a trigger lock.

Supreme Court After the lawsuit was struck down then repealed it was finally taken to Supreme Court. The court agree to hear the case on November 20, 2007. The decision of the Supreme Court is as follows: "The second amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm on connectable service in the militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense with in the home."

The effect on today's regulations The district of Columbia V. Heller case changed the gun restrictions in the home to accommodate the ever changing society and what said Society requires for protection. Making guns accessible to those who feel they need them to protect their homes.
