Reluctant Readers Beanstalk Part 1 Training

How might the child feel? How do you support them? Encouraging reluctant readers How might the child feel? How do you support them? Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Welcome We’re all going to do something really fun! We’re going to ……   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Welcome Wind the Bobbin Up Beanstalk Part 1 Training Sing in full with actions. Just go for it, don’t stop to encourage people Wind the Bobbin Up  Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Did you join in with the singing and the actions? If you did why? If you didn’t why not? Welcome Hands Up/Stand Up Include the pretended to join in people in the not group   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

I’m a fantastic singer Everyone else is better than me I knew all the words I trust those around me I love this song I really enjoy nursery rhymes I love performing I am just brilliant at singing I’ve heard this loads of times before I expected to sing a nursery rhyme today Singing is amazing, everyone should so it I had complete confidence that you’d keep me safe I’ve done this loads of times before This is my favourite thing ever I did what was expected of me Everyone else is better than me I don’t know the words I don’t want to in front of my mates I don’t like the song It felt childish I’m embarrassed I’m not good enough I don’t know the tune It’s not what I’m here to do I don’t see the point I don’t trust you I don’t know the actions I’d rather be doing ….. I don’t want to ‘comply’ Look through the reasons 1 by 1 and ask people to indicate if this was true for them (hands up)   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Beanstalk Part 1 Training To participate you need a higher balance of ‘’Yes’ motivators than ‘No’. This may be a combination of several small factors or just 1 massive thing   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Ability = actually can’t do it What’s stopping you? Ability = actually can’t do it   Reticence = can do it/want to do it but have an ‘emotional barrier’ that’s stopping me. Reluctance = can do it but don’t want to do it   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Relating this to Reading! I don’t know the words I don’t know the tune I don’t know the actions Everyone else is better than me I don’t want to in front of my mates It felt childish I’m embarrassed I’m not good enough I don’t trust you I don’t like the song It’s not what I’m here to do I don’t see the point I’d rather be doing ….. I don’t want to comply Lack of Decoding, Vocabulary or Comprehension Skills Lack of self-esteem or confidence Lack of motivation   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Are you sure it’s reluctance? Recap Are you sure it’s reluctance? Ability = Demonstrate & enable practice Reticence = Give opportunities that build confidence Reluctance = ....   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Encouraging Reluctant Readers Welcome   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Well, they say you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink, and I guess that’s true. But, you can do a lot of things to entice him to drink!   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

You can show him how to drink day after day. Read to the child, have fun, show your joy and enthusiasm   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

You can lead him to the same watering hole at the same time every day and surround him with other horses who are drinking. You do this by turning up for regular sessions Again show your enjoyment and pleasure   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

You can offer lots of different flavours of water and tell him how great the water tastes. Provide Lots of Good Books! - Your Book Box, keep it fresh – school library or local library Sell the books – don’t dismiss them if the child isn’t initially keen you can probably make anything look fun!   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

You can invite other horses to share testimonials about how wonderful their drinking experience has been and give him small samples that might make him thirsty. Leverage Peer Power  If you read a book with one child why not get them to write a short review to sell it   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

You can even present him with his very own custom bottle of water- flavoured with his favourite things. Match Kids to Books (Present him with a custom-flavored bottle of water): This is one of the most powerful (and underutilized) tools in our teaching toolbox for enticing reluctant readers: we must match them with books that 1)They can read and 2)They want to read.   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

Reading can change your life, it can inform, motivate, inspire and elevate; but it must be reading you do for yourself, at your own pace, in your own way, and that has a bearing on your own background, interests, values, beliefs and aspirations. (Woods, 2001, p.74-5)   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

‘The Reading Thing’ Remember! Think wider than books….. Any positive engagement with ‘The Reading Thing’ will help a reluctant or reticent reader. Think wider than books…..   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

As a reading helper you are … Improving Ability – As a reading helper you will be supporting children to practice skills learnt in class –  which is different to teaching! “(Her) reading has come on leaps and bounds. From struggling with certain CVC words she can now read sentences fluently and can decode a much wider variety of words.”   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

As a reading helper you are … Overcoming Reticence – you are nurturing children one to one to give them a safe space to build their confidence and self esteem “(she) appears to be becoming more confident and adventurous with reading, sometimes offering to read without being asked.”   Beanstalk Part 1 Training

“… has greater enjoyment of reading and a more positive attitude.” As a reading helper you are … Reducing Reluctance – you are offering a choice of reading materials and one to one attention to encourage children to find their motivation to read “… has greater enjoyment of reading and a more positive attitude.”   Beanstalk Part 1 Training
