Which Option is right for you? Project Skills in the Life Sciences (30 credit) BIO603 Open to all students. (Experimental) Research Project (30 credit) BIO600 BMD600 BMD650 BMD670 To ensure that all students receive a positive experience and get appropriate levels of supervision, it is necessary for us to manage the numbers of students undertaking lab-based projects. If you are not ranked in the top 160-200 students (based on your 1st year overall mark) it is unlikely that we will be able to offer you an experimental research project.

Which Option is right for you? I plan NOT to work as a researcher, but, e.g., in Science Journalism, Manager, Finance, Law, Marketing, Sales. I want a career in science but am not a good communicator. I plan to do a PhD. I want a career as a research scientist. Experimental Research Project Project Skills in the Life Sciences

Which Option is right for you? I don’t want to be a laboratory scientist I want to be a scientist and am a good communicator Project Skills in the life Sciences BIO603 (Experimental) Research Project BIO600/BMD600 BMD650/670

What if my grades mean I can’t take an experimental research project What if my grades mean I can’t take an experimental research project? But you want to do a PhD You need to do an M.Sc. / M.Res. to get onto most PhD programs, so no door will be closed to you.

Final year Research Projects - an Important Choice:   Your first taste of research. You discover if you want to do research in future. You will learn valuable skills and techniques. 30 credits in 3rd year 25% of your final year mark

How do you make your project supervisor choice?   1) Do you have an appropriate background? 2) What skills do you want to learn? 3) What subject area are you interested in? 4) Does the supervisors’ projects sound interesting? 5) Do you want to work in the summer or term time? 6) Do you want to be guided by the lecturer or mostly by postdocs/PhD students? 7) Which campus will work for you?

Allocation of student to project supervisor Academics want to choose who does a project in their lab BUT so do students
