A new way to see abnormal blood vessels in AMD Callum Narita – Honours student
Neovascular - “wet” AMD
Treatment Injection of anti-VEGF into eye Early treatment leads to better outcomes
Optical coherence tomography Cross-sectional view of the eye We can see fluid from wet AMD We can’t see the vessels that are leaking
Dye angiography Dye through cannula in arm Can see leaky blood vessels at the back of the eye (“wet” AMD) But we don’t like to give dye to everyone
OCT angiography Non-invasive view of the vessels at the back of the eye Can see particular layers Asymptomatic new vessels But can’t see leak Images retrieved from Teussink MM et al. Invest Ophthalmol Vis Sci 2015;56(9):5229-37.
Normal detection of neovascular AMD Symptoms Poor vision Distorted vision Delay OCT or dye angiography Visualise fluid Treat or image further Asymptomatic blood vessels
Clinical Research What can we use it for? Can see new vessels Identify high risk patients Clinical Learning about vascular changes Research
What can we use it for? – research Find changes prior to neovascular AMD Look for blood vessel changes in dry AMD Is new vessel growth protective? Identifying patients for clinical trials
Our OCTA New technology, allowing for faster scanning and higher resolution International research collaboration
Thank you!
