God is Our Refuge and Defense Psalms 11 God is Our Refuge and Defense

Introduction Two voices speak in Psalms 11, one of fear, the other of faith. One counsels confusion, the other commitment. One mourns collapse, the other expresses confidence in God’s purpose, and providential care.

The Counsel of the Cowardly How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your mountain?” There is a time to flee (1 Cor. 6:18; 10:14; 2 Tim. 2:22), but there is also a time to stand (2 Cor. 10:1-6; Eph. 6:10-20; 1 Pet. 5:8-9).

The Craftiness of the Wicked The wicked bend the bow, making ready the arrow on the string, shooting in darkness at the upright of heart. Sinful men use every means at their disposal, honest or dishonest, open or underhanded (Psa. 31:9-13; 41:7-9; 52:1-4).

The Collapse of the Foundations Counseling despair, the wicked would demonize and demoralize the righteous: “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Yet, even in the darkest hour, the foundations are not destroyed (1 Sam. 16:14-23; 18:10-16; Dan. 2:20-21; 4:28-37; 2 Tim. 2:19).

The Confidence of the Faithful The Lord is in His holy temple; His throne is in heaven. Accordingly, there is no need for fear. God remains in control (Psa. 115:1-8; Isa. 40:21-26; Hab. 2:18-20).

The Consequences of Life God tests and tries all mankind, punishing wickedness and rewarding righteousness. Are you prepared to meet the Lord in judgment (2 Cor. 5:10-11; Heb. 10:35-39; 1 Pet. 3:10-12)?

Conclusion Genuine faith acts in trusting obedience to God’s precepts, accepts life’s trials as an expression of His purpose, and anticipates the glorious outcome of His promises.
