Colonies for (European) Profit Mercantilism, Triangular Trade, and the Middle Passage

Favorable Balance of Trade Mercantilism POWER = How can I (Europe) get more “power”? Favorable Balance of Trade

Triangular Trade Develops as a “natural” progression of the Columbian Exchange + Mercantilism

Why African Slaves?? Europeans needed to produce A LOT in the colonies in order to profit according to Mercantilism. Problem: Native American “workers” kept dying or escaping! Solution: Bring over African slaves! They are immune to most European Diseases They are experienced farmers They don’t know the area – so they will be totally dependent on us and unable to escape!!

The Middle Passage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nePOpkYwjY&safe=active As you watch, think about what Africans sold into slavery saw, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt. Two Sides of a Story Read and compare both accounts.
