Elements and Matter Vocabulary

Anything with mass that takes up space.

Ex. All things in this classroom are made up of matter. Anything with mass that takes up space. Ex. All things in this classroom are made up of matter.

The amount of matter in an object; measured using a balance or scale.

The amount of matter in an object; measured using a balance or scale. Mass The amount of matter in an object; measured using a balance or scale.

The amount of space matter takes up.

Volume refers to how much is inside an object…milk in a jug. The amount of space matter takes up. Volume refers to how much is inside an object…milk in a jug.

A measurement comparing the amount of mass in an object to the amount of space it takes up.

Density A measurement comparing the amount of mass in an object to the amount of space it takes up. Ex. A styrofoam ball and a golf ball of the same mass will not have the same density. Think about how light or heavy they would feel.

Particles are closely packed together and they hold their own shape.

Particles are closely packed together and they hold their own shape. Solid Particles are closely packed together and they hold their own shape.

Particles are loosely put together and it takes the shape of its container.

Liquid Particles are loosely put together and it takes the shape of its container.

Particles are spread out, fast moving, and have no definite volume or shape.

Gas Particles are spread out, fast moving, and have no definite volume or shape.

A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.

A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances. Element A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.

The smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element.

up of an atom (electrons, The smallest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element. An element is made up of an atom (electrons, protons, and neutrons)

The smallest particle of substance that retains the chemical & physical properties of the substance, and is composed of two or more atoms.

Molecule The smallest particle of substance that retains the chemical & physical properties of the substance, and is composed of two or more atoms.

A pure substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined.

It is made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. H2O Compound A pure substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined. Water is a compound. It is made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. H2O
