Southampton University Teaching AS/A2 PE

What time do we finish! 2 things that will happen today Lunch will be at 12.30pm We will finish at 2.30pm

When I first began teaching ‘A-Level’ PE… Overuse of the core text book Dictating notes Revision occurred only after the content had been covered Students knowledge and understanding was assessed largely through ‘hands up’ and ‘tests’ Students stayed in their seats Used dated examples Spoon fed the students Students relied on ‘unreliable’ internet research

Today We will focus on the lesson itself and how your teaching can avoid my early experiences! Introduce a framework/model for teaching theoretical PE Apply and try the model!

The Sport IQ Model Relate Review Revise Movement State changes Study skills Play games Music

Subject knowledge Select an area of the specification. You will be applying what we do today to your area throughout today and plan the ‘perfect’ theoretical lesson. One group will teach their lesson at the end of the day!

1. Health, exercise and fitness – definitions of health and fitness and the relationship between them – consideration of the problems associated with trying to define health and fitness – components of health-related fitness – stamina, muscular endurance, strength, speed, power, flexibility – components of skill-related fitness – reaction time, agility, co-ordination and balance – effect of lifestyle choices on health and fitness.

2. Nutrition – the seven classes of food and their exercise-related function – fats, proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, fibre, minerals and water – the need for a balanced diet and the energy balance of food – the performer’s use of nutritional information based on their activity, difference in diet composition between endurance athletes and power athletes – definitions of obesity and the limitations in trying to define it – percentage body fat/body composition and Body Mass Index (BMI) as measures of nutritional suitability.

3. Decision making decision making – reaction time, simple reaction time, choice reaction time, response time, movement time and the relationship between them

4. Methods of guidance methods of guidance: verbal, visual, manual and mechanical

5. Concepts of physical activity the characteristics and objectives of – play – physical education – leisure and recreation – active leisure – outdoor and adventurous activities – sport

6. Barriers to participation the barriers to participation and possible solutions to overcome them for the following target groups: – disability – socio-economic class – ethnic group – gender

Review How much do your students already know about the topic you are about to begin? Does the lesson follow on from another topic? (opportunity to recap) This can be a good opportunity to create the classroom climate you wish to achieve

Review examples AS/A2 as a student? AS/A2 as a trainee? Problems, surprises and concerns? What do you already know? (10 questions)

Some ‘review’ examples Time bombs Overtake

Relate Can the students see the relevance of the content with regards to; Modern day sport? Their own sporting experiences? The practical components of their course? Let’s try this with the topic of media, sponsorship and sport

Media, sponsorship and sport What examples of sponsorship do you see in the following video clip? http://www.sport-iq.com/1619back.htm What would be the differences between this and the Champions League Final?

The golden triangle Take a look at the photocopied sheets Task A and B

Some ‘relate’ examples Chain gangs – task A and task B Picture perfect

Theory and practical combined?

Revise A chance to use exam papers, mark schemes, glossaries etc in a different way and to develop revision/examination techniques

Using glossaries and definitions Definition bingo Relay runners Boxing clever

Using exam papers and mark schemes Red herrings (use other ppt)

Using exam papers and mark schemes What’s the question? Upward - Type of movement - extension - Prime mover - triceps brachii - Type of contraction - isotonic concentric Downward - Type of movement - flexion - Type of contraction - isotonic eccentric [6] Q.Identify the type of movement, prime mover and type of muscle contraction, that occurs at the elbow joint during both the upward, and downward phase, of the press-up.

Using exam questions in a different way Question ball Peek, copy, all in and save Pit Stop

It’s not what you do it’s the way that you do it! Count to ten in Japanese Shopping list Walk the walk and talk the talk
