America in 1930s Micah

Wall Street crash &Great Depression Wall Street stock market crashed in October 1929, is also known as the Tuesday. Then world economy was plunged into the Great Depression. By the winter of 1932, America was in the depths of the greatest economic depression in its history. Between 1 and 2 million people travelled the country desperately looking for work. Signs saying 'No Men Wanted' were displayed all over the country. This relates to George and Lennie because they are two travellers traveling around looking for work around the country.

Economy As early as 1926, there were signs that the boom was under threat - this was seen in the collapse of land prices in Florida. This relates to George and Lennie because there dream is to buy a land as there own farm and because of the land price in 1930 they would probably be able to afford it, but they would have to work extra hard for the money.

The American Dream The American Dream is a national ethos of the United States, a set of ideals in which freedom includes the opportunity for prosperity and success, and an upward social mobility social achieved through hard work.

The Dustbowl The dust bowl is period of time when dust storms causing major ecological and agricultural damage to American. This relates to geroge and Lennie because they work on farms

Race and racism The 1930's was a time for race relations in America. 1910's and 1920's) racism was as strong as ever in the Southern states. in 1930 blacks had no civil rights, land ownership was possible but very limited. for instance if a black family "owned" land, the white people could take it if the saw a use for it. blacks were not allow to serve in any political positions on any level. I think this relates to Crooks because he is black and he’s been created different to others how live on the ranch.

Women in America The typical woman in the 1930s had a husband who was still employed, although he had probably taken a pay cut to keep his job; if the man lost his job, the family often had enough resources to survive without going on relief or losing all its possessions. The story of women in the 1930 and in the book are both different on my point of view.
