What is Weather? Energy is transferred between fast-moving molecules and slower-moving molecules CONDUCTION – transfer of energy when molecules collide.
Air Masses, Pressure Systems, and Frontal Boundaries
The weather instrument here is used to determine dewpoint and relative humidity. Based on the temperatures shown, the approximate dewpoint temperature.
Rainfall Types  Tom Abbott, Biddulph High School and made available through and only for non commercial use in schools.
Types of rainfall What are the different types of rain and where do they happen?
Starter Arrange the following sentences in order to explain how rainfall happens a)Water vapour turns back to liquid and clouds form. b)Energy from the.
Wind Currents Air Pressure. The uneven heating of Earth’s Surface cause differences in air pressure. The force exerted by the air is called air pressure.
Fronts and Clouds I can predict the cloud type that will results from various types of fronts.
Air Pressure 2 nd Factor that Affects Weather What is Air Pressure? The weight of the air pushing down on us and everything else around us. Happens because.

Map Symbol Flashcards Low Pressure = cloudy weather and precipitation Centers of all storms have areas of low pressure.
Air and the Sun * Weather reporter  meteorologist  wind, air pressure, and temperature. * Weather starts with the sun; source of heat. * Sun’s rays.
Pressure Systems Low pressure: an area where the atmospheric pressure is lower than the surrounding area Air rises then it cools and condenses Weather:
AIM: Explain the main feature of air pressure
Low Pressure Systems vs High Pressure Systems. Let’s Compare Low Pressure Systems (L) High Pressure Systems (H)
Objective: Determine the humidity and temperature of air masses.
SCIENCE CHAPTER 6 WATER CYCLE AND WEATHER. LESSON 1 Where is Earth’s Water ?
Meteorology, Factors effecting weather, and forecasting weather.
What type of weather will a LOW pressure system bring? As a low pressure system approaches the pressure will drop due to rising air. As the air rises.

Whether it’s cold or whether it’s hot, we shall have weather whether or not!
1. What Makes the Weather Change? 2 The kind of weather you are having right now depends on the kind of air mass that is over your area 3 Vocabulary:
Weather Symbols and Station Models. Why do we use Symbols? Less space Universal language Why do we use station models Gives us a small picture of weather.
AIR MASSES AND FRONTS. AIR MASSES A section of air that has similar characteristics (temperature, weather, humidity, etc.) throughout it from the area.
Cloud Formation: Lifting Processes Atmospheric Lifting In order for air to form clouds, the air must be lifted and rise in altitude There are 4 types.

Presentation transcript:

High Pressure vs. Low Pressure

H is for “HIGH PRESSURE” H is for HEAVY BLUE = COOL Cool air contracts Cool air sinks because COOL air is HEAVIER Sunny but slightly cooler weather Heavy shoves clouds out of the way CLEAR SKIES Pressure increases which makes it heavier

L is for “LOW PRESSURE” L is for LIGHTER RED = WARM Light air/low pressure expands Warm air rises because warm air is LIGHTER Often brings rainy weather Pressure decreases which makes it lighter

COLD FRONT Looks like icicles Has air that is HEAVY A cold front has COLD(cooler), dry, air behind it as it moves forward When a cold front meets a warm front, it shoves the warm front up higher Brings THUNDERSTORMS Pp. 600

WARM FRONT Looks like half suns A warm front has warm, moist air behind it. When it moves over a cold front, it will rain near the frontal line where the rising air condenses. Pp. 600
