An Orientation for New Leaders Home Storage Centers © 2010 by Intellectual Reserve, Inc. All rights reserved

Home Storage Centers The purpose of this orientation is to help you understand: The principle of preparing for adversity by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings. How home storage centers help members build a basic supply of food for their longer-term home storage needs. Home Storage Centers

What counsel have Church leaders given about preparing ourselves and our families for times of adversity?

Home Storage Centers Our Heavenly Father created this beautiful earth, with all its abundance, for our benefit and use. His purpose is to provide for our needs as we walk in faith and obedience. He has lovingly commanded us to prepare every needful thing (see D&C 109:8) so that, should adversity come, we may care for ourselves and our neighbors and support bishops as they care for others. We encourage Church members worldwide to prepare for adversity in life by having a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings. The First Presidency, in All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Home Storage (2007), 1.

Home Storage Centers Many more people could ride out the storm-tossed waves in their economic lives if they had their year's supply of food... and were debt free. Many today have followed this counsel in reverse. They have at least a year's supply of debt and are food free. Closing Remarks, BYU Womens Conference, May 4, 2001, 5. Encouraging Food Storage President Thomas S. Monson

Home Storage Centers President Gordon B. Hinckley Prophetic Counsel (See Conference Report, Oct. 2002, 62–66; or Ensign, Nov. 2002, 56–59.) After watching this video in which President Gordon B. Hinckley describes an approach to building up a supply of food, share experiences youve had in building your food storage.

Home Storage Centers What types of adversity may befall Church members that may lead them to draw on family home storage?

Home Storage Centers Answers may include: Natural disasters Illness Injury or death of a primary income earner Job loss Downturn in economic conditions Unexpected price increases on essential items like fuel, utilities, and food

Home Storage Centers To become self-reliant, Church members should have a basic supply of food and water and some money in savings. To do this they should: Build a three-month supply of food that is part of their normal, daily diet. Store drinking water. Establish a financial reserve. Gradually build a longer-term supply of food (where permitted) that will sustain life. Items could include wheat, white rice, and beans. Home Storage Items

Home Storage Centers The Church publishes two guides that outline the principles of family home storage and family finances: All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Home Storage All Is Safely Gathered In: Family Finances Copies of the guides may be obtained from Church Distribution Services stores, ordered online or downloaded on or downloaded from

Home Storage Centers To help Church members package food for longer-term home storage, home storage centers provide food products and equipment such as the following: Beans, wheat, rice, and other items that members may purchase and then package in #10 cans or foil pouches Food products prepackaged in #10 cans that members may purchase Portable can seamers and pouch sealers that members check out if they wish to package food at home Purpose of Home Storage Centers

Home Storage Centers Church members use a home storage center order form to purchase food products and canning supplies. A copy of the form is shown on the next slide. Members can download or print a copy of the form from the Provident Living Web site. If they choose to, they can fill out the form electronically before printing it.

Home Storage Centers Church members may come to a home storage center by themselves or in groups to package and purchase products. The telephone number and address of the nearest home storage center can be found on the Provident Living Web site. Click the image below to enlarge it.
