Compounds or mixtures. 24/11/2018

We are learning Define elements, compounds and mixtures Classify molecules as elements, compounds or mixtures Describe how mixtures can be separated Explain why separating compounds is more difficult than separating mixtures

Separation techniques

Removing Chlorine from impure rock salt. Have a look at the equipment we have on the side. Rock salt contains salt which has a chemical formula of NaCl How could we remove the salt from the rock salt? Take a minute to think about how we could remove the Cl from the NaCl. What is the chemical compound name of NaCl? How many atoms are present in the compound NaCl?

Method Dissolve the rock salt in water 1) Fill in the steps yourself 2) Filter the impurities out 1)Fill in the steps yourself Place the brine on the front desk for Miss to separate the Cl from the NaCl.

Literacy. How are compounds different from mixtures Element Atom Bonding Electron Iron Sulphur Magnetic Conduct electricity Separate

Electrolysis of salt water (brine)
