TEM: The twente education model Prof. Ramses A. Wessel Vice rector

Education of the university of twente Our profile High Tech, Human Touch Student’s competencies / roles: Researcher, Designer, Organizer T-shaped professional Attitude: Entrepreneurial 24-11-2018

Why TEM? Preparation for the future labour market – 21st century skills From teaching to learning Learning together Student driven learning Spreading the work load / more efficient use of available time Regular and swift feedback Decreasing (late) drop outs Enhancing study yield TOM Toolkit 24-11-2018

WHat is TEM? 1. Student Driven Learning Student Driven Learning: a (pro-) active, entrepreneurial attitude, flexibility (in content, time, activities, role…) not only help students test their understanding and develop skills, but also invite them to ask new questions and seek other learning TOM Toolkit 24-11-2018

WHat is TEM? 2. Full-time thematic modules Modules are the new courses (a move from 12 to 4 per year) 1 grade in the end; towards integral/comprehensive testing All modules are 15 EC BSA: 3 modules (45 EC) TOM Toolkit 24-11-2018

WHat is TEM? 3. Project-led education Developing skills Applying theory to practical solutions Group projects (or/with individual assignments) From approx. 30-70% (100% would fit the TOM philosophy) TOM Toolkit 24-11-2018

WHat is TEM? 4. Uniform curriculum structure 1. opening semester (modules 1 and 2), 2. core program, including referral advice or BSA (modules 3 through 6), 3. specialization (modules 7 and 8), 4. minor (modules 9 and 10), and 5. graduation semester (modules 11 and 12) Common mathematics line for science & technology Joint methods line for the social sciences ‘Reflection’ programme of 15 EC TOM Toolkit 24-11-2018

A fixed structure, but… 1 2 3 4 1 5 6 7 8 2 9 10 11 + 12 3

… flexibility

First Results WHat has been changed in our education? Learning together: working collaboratively does not always mean that students learn collaboratively. Active learning and teaching methods: every module has a project. Next to traditional lectures and tutorials also new teaching methods (peer learning, flipped classroom) Higher workload among students and staff: Frequent feedback: by tutoring and frequent summative assessments High administrative loads, complex processes Students work hard Teachers work together in module teams: Frequent coordination meetings is necessary Working in teams becomes usual business 24-11-2018

First results Integration of modules: module parts are cohesive Assessment seperate T-shaped professional: ‘Shared’ education: +/- 20% van de modules Increased level of deep learning early in the programme Reducement of (late) drop-out: students drop-out earlier (also because of binding recommendation) 24-11-2018

TOM Toolkit 24-11-2018

TEM challenges Still seperate courses instead of full integration Still teacher driven instead of really Student Driven Increased testing pressure Work load for teaching (and support!) staff (Very) full schedules for students Difficult to accomodate students that are simply not able to study in the regular speed of 15 EC modules TOM Toolkit 24-11-2018
