Access Problems and Solutions for Full-text Articles or E-books OARE Module 3 Appendix: Access Problems and Solutions for Full-text Articles or E-books 25 March 2018

Via OARE, the Journal of Forest Research has been opened. This set of slides discusses ‘what could go wrong’ when attempting to open a full-text article. As is noted in the slide, we have opened the Journal of Forest Research and will attempt to open the contents of a current article. 25 March 2018

A similar situation can happen with E-books.. When attempting to open a full-text article, the publisher – Springer Nature - has requested a fee to purchase the article. A similar situation can happen with E-books.. Instead of viewing either the Full Article (HTML) or PDF versions of an article from Volume 16, Issue 2, we are redirected to this page of the SpringerLink. We are told ‘Access to this Content is Restricted’ and given the option to ‘Buy Online Access to this Article’. What has occurred is that the publisher has not recognized your institution’s authentication via the OARE login and will not grant access to the specific article. How should you proceed from this point? 25 March 2018

Access problems can be caused by: Access to the journal has a blocked popup message Problems with local systems (configuration of user institution’s firewall, configuration of browser) Failure to properly LOGIN with the institution's User Name/Password Journal titles not included in publishers’ offer Technical problems at the publisher's website 25 March 2018

Problems opening the journal from the publishers portal (popups) For security reasons, some computers are configured to block pop-ups If a small window opens at the top of the screen, select the option to ‘Allow popups’ and then click on ‘Done’ (example for a Hinari popup) 25 March 2018

Institutional Firewall Problems If problems persist, please can you contact your computer department as the problem may be on your side, probably with your firewall. Check that your firewall does not block proxies, or at least allows our proxy server, otherwise you will not be able to login. Please check that your firewall permits access to the OARE host and domain names: www.unep.org oare.research4life.org oarelogin.research4life.org stsr4l.who.int Otherwise, you will not be able to login properly and access OARE full-text articles. 25 March 2018

The Logged in from: … message confirms that you have completed the login. You also can confirm login by viewing the url (web address) at the top of the page that will read: login.research4life.org/tacsgr0oare_research4life.org/ 25 March 2018

To view access to the specific journal and issue, open the J of the Journals collection list. 25 March 2018

Now opened is the link to the Journal of Forest Research in the J section of the Journals Collection A-Z list. The green icon confirms that there should be access to this journal and the required volume/issue. By going to the J list of the Find journals by title A-Z list, a user can confirm that he or she has logged in correctly (see the login.oaresciences.org/whalecomm… address) and that the Journal of Forest Research should be available via OARE (the box is green). Note that the available volumes are listed (in this case, v.8 2003 – current issue). It is possible that you are looking for a issue that is not available electronically. 25 March 2018

Another method of checking is to locate Springer Nature by opening the Publisher list. 25 March 2018

By scrolling down the Browse Publisher – Springer Nature (Accessible Content) list, we can confirm the access to the Journal of Forest Research and the specific volume/issue. Note that the Type (Journals & Books) is listed. 25 March 2018

This is an example where Springer Nature has not granted access to their journals. Note the [!] icons in the All Items listing. If you do not login, OARE will display this All Items listing. 25 March 2018

We now think that the problem is between the publisher and OARE– that the publisher is not recognizing the OARE authentication correctly. This is a sample email that could be sent to oare@oaresciences.org Note that the email lists the volume/issue, name of journal and what occurred. Also listed is the institutional username and what steps you have taken (to confirm proper registration and that the journal should be available). Screen captures of the pages from the publisher can be attached (as the url is very useful to the OARE staff). Examples of such screen captures would be the 1st two slides of this appendix. How to create a ‘screen capture’ is discussed in the following slide. If the institution should have access to a specific journal, this is a sample email – to send to r4l@research4life.org. Note: make sure you include the institution’s User Name, the name of the journal(s), issue(s) and other details. Also include a screen capture that contains the URL (Internet address) of the journal. 25 March 2018

To make a screen capture, use the Snipping Tool – go to Programs, (Windows) Accessories, Snipping Tool After you open the Snipping Tool, click on New and the screen becomes opaque, If you click on New again, you can select what you want to capture/save – by holding down/dragging the curser. Make sure you include the url of the webpage. 25 March 2018

Clearing Cache Instructions You previously have logged into another R4L program - that uses the same login page. After closing AGORA, ARDI or HINARI, you get the following message when trying to login to OARE: 25 March 2018

Clear the Cache memory in the Mozilla Firefox web browser: from the Open Menu icon , click on History and Clear Recent History. Check Cache box and click on Clear Now. After doing these steps, close the browser completely – to clean the cache. Then open the browser and login to any R4L programme. 25 March 2018

Configure Clearing the Cache memory for Mozilla Firefox: from the Open Menu icon , click on Options, then open Privacy, check Clear history when Firefox closes and click on OK. Again, close the browser completely – to clean the cache. This option means you only have to do this once! Click on Options Menu and then in Privacy icon. Configure the History section as the model above, specially "Clear history when Firefox closes". After doing these steps, close the browser completely – to clean the cache. Then re-open the browser and now you can login into a different Research4Life programme. 25 March 2018

Clear the Cache memory in the Google Chrome web browser: From the Open Menu icon , click on History, then Clear browsing data, check Cashed images and files and then click on Clear browsing data. After doing these steps, close the browser completely – to clean the cache. Then open the browser and login to any R4L programme. 25 March 2018

Configure Clearing the Cache memory for Google Chrome: From the open menu icon , click on Settings. Go to the bottom of the page and click on Show Advance Settings. Go to Privacy section and click on Clear browsing data. Make sure box for Cached images and files is checked and then click on Clear browsing data. Again, close the browser completely - to clear the cache. This means that you only have to do this once! 25 March 2018
