Environmental Health & Safety Scissor Lifts Lineage Logistics Environmental Health & Safety

Before Operating Scissor Lifts Identifying and controlling hazards is very important for job site safety. A pre-start inspection is required for all types of scissor lifts. Check operating and emergency controls and safety devices such as guardrails Personal fall-protection gear Wheels and tires, and other machine components specified by the manufacturer. Look for possible leaks (air, hydraulic fluid, and fuel-system) and loose or missing parts.

Before Operating Scissor Lifts Check area in which the scissor lift will be used: Level surface (Do not exceed manufacturer slope recommendations) Holes, drop-offs, bumps, debris, etc. Overhead obstructions and overhead power lines Stable surface Other hazards Set outriggers, brakes, wheel chocks

Preventing Tipovers Do not exceed manufacturer rated load capacity limits Do not travel to job location with lift in elevated position. Set up proper work zone protection when working near traffic Positioning of lifts Do not drive near drop-offs or holes. Do not raise or drive platform on uneven or soft surfaces. Do not raise platform on slope or drive onto slope when elevated. Do not raise platform in windy or gusty conditions. Avoid excessive horizontal forces when working on elevated scissor lifts Preventing Electrocutions: Workers must stay at least 10 feet away from overhead power lines.

Scissor Lift Safety Only trained personnel can operate the lift Employees must inspect the machine before each shift Safety

Operator Training Training must be done by a qualified person experienced with the particular lift model Training must include: Electrical, fall, and other hazards involved in operating the lift Precautions for dealing with hazards Rated load capacity for the lift (including workers, tools, materials, etc.) Manufacturer requirements, as outlined in operator manual Demonstration of skill and knowledge in actual operation of the scissor lift

Fall Protection OSHA regulates scissor lifts as scaffolds Fall protection is required (full body harness with lanyard) Always close entrance chains or doors Stand on floor of lift platform Do not climb on or lean over guardrails

Scissor Lift Safety A Full-Body Harness should be worn at all times and is to be attached to the basket at the manufacturer’s anchor point when operating an aerial lift.

Scissor Lift Safety Employees shall always stand on the floor of the basket and shall not sit or climb on the edge of the basket or use planks, stepladders, rails or other devices to gain greater heights Safety

Scissor Lift Safety Do Not stand on rails when operating the lift Tie-Off to Platform What not to Do

Scissor Lift Safety Watch the leading edge Watch for any holes in the slab LEADING EDGE

Scissor Lift Safety Scissor lifts that have a small foot print can tip easily Do not stick anything between the folding supports It can cause loss of limb or can cause the machine to malfunction

Accident Information Many Accidents and Deaths are a result of one of the following: Untrained/Unauthorized employees operating a lift Employees falling off the lift Lift tipping over Contact with live electrical wires Lift encountering a leading edge or a hole Accidents

Accident Prevention ALWAYS tie off When working around electrical wires be aware of any potential electrocutions When driving the lift be aware of the surroundings
