Pick one cell you observed last week and explain how its structure is necessary for it to complete its function

Test Review

Which organelle functions to produce energy in the form of atp? Mitochondria

Why is the nuclear envelope called an envelope and not just a membrane? Because it’s a double layered membrane with space in between like an envelope. It has pores to regulate what moves in and out.

Why is the nucleus so special that it gets an envelope instead of just a membrane? Because it houses your DNA!

Why don’t animals need cell walls? Unlike plants and fungi, animals can have bones, muscles, and other complex structures that help them maintain their shape. Plants would not stand upright if they didn’t have cell walls

What unique structures do some cells have that allow cells to move around? Cilia and flagella

What would happen if you didn’t have ribosomes? You couldn’t synthesize proteins and you’d actually just die if you didn’t have them at all.

Does this cell belong to a plant, animal, or bacteria? Plant because it has a cell wall and a single large vacuole

Why don’t humans have chloroplasts? Because we don’t do photosynthesis

Is this a prokaryote or eukaryote?

What is the function of the golgi body? Modifying sorting and packaging proteins

Why does the rough er look rough? Because it has ribosomes all over it

What structure in plant cells cause them to look wilted when they are dehydrated? Vacuoles: Vacuoles are large and plump when they are full, but if there is not enough water in the cell, the organelle shrinks causing the cells to shrivel and make the plant look wilted

Why do the cells in your liver contain more lysosomes than the cells in your central nervous system Because lysosomes break down waste, and the liver functions to filter toxins out of your blood, so you need a lot of lysosomes to do that job.

You discover a new organism while hiking in the alps with your microscope. The organism looks very simple and is composed of 3 cells. Do you classify it as a prokaryote or a eukaryote? Eukaryote. Prokaryotes can only be single celled

What cell part helps maintain the shape and structure of the cell? Cytoskeleton

Name one cell type and explain how its specialized structure allows it to perform its function.
