SPACE / DEPTH In Photography, space refers to the use of negative space (empty space) or to the illusion of depth created by overlapping elements.

Depth A sense of depth can be created by overlapping elements in order to create the following layers Foreground Middleground Background

Depth - foreground, middleground, background

Depth - foreground, middleground, background

Shallow depth of field: When only part of the image is in focus In photography, Depth of Field refers to the amount of focus within an image. DOF is controlled by Lens Aperture (size of opening in the lens). Deep depth of field: Everything in focus from foreground all the way to background. Shallow depth of field: When only part of the image is in focus

Only part of the image is in focus Shallow Depth of Field Only part of the image is in focus

Only part of the image is in focus Shallow Depth of Field Only part of the image is in focus

All layers of the image are in focus Deep Depth of Field All layers of the image are in focus

All layers of the image are in focus Deep Depth of Field All layers of the image are in focus

Negative Space Negative space can communicate moods, ideas, and emotions.

Negative Space Negative space can bring the emphasis to either the subject or the empty space.

Space / Depth Examples Find the following examples and post them: Shallow depth of field with foreground, middleground, background Deep Depth of field with foreground, middleground, background Negative space creating emotion Negative space bringing focus to the subject. After each image, write two sentences explaining the following: How is space being created in this image? What idea/feeling/mood does the use of space communicate? Ralph H.
