Prevention Fund Update H.R 4725 passed in the House Energy and Commerce Committee members mounted a vigorous defense Myths were dispelled Rep. Schakowsky (IL) gave examples of the good work in his state Rep. Green (TX) highlighted the Fund’s role in epidemiology and public health The Academy continues to educate members of Congress on the effectiveness of prevention programs

Older American Re-authorization Act (OAA) Passed in the House on March 21, 2016 An amended version of S.192 from July 2015 President signed Bill into Law on April 19, 2016 Only took 4 years!!! Had bipartisan support

Older American Re-authorization Act (OAA) Section 4 of the Bill authorizes: Congregate nutrition services Home delivered nutrition services Disease Prevention and health promotion servies Nutrition Services Incentive Program States will not receive less than 99 % of previousl allotment for Fiscal Years 2017-2019 Grants for supportive services that include chronic care such as Diabetes Included health screening and fall prevention screening Facilitates collaboration among registered dietitian nutritionist and other experts across various federal agencies to ensure the patients have access to effective, coordinated care for better health

More OAA State nutritional projects shall: Encourage use of locally grown foods in meal preparation. Identify potential partnerships and contracts with local producers and provides of locally grown foods. **S.192 www.congress.gov

Texas Malnutrition Week Wednesday September 30 2016 Texas Academy invited to speak for Abbott Nutrition Government Affairs Luncheon to Texas legislative staffers. Carol Ireton Jones Ainsley Malone Members of ASPEN Raised awareness of malnutrition and offered appropriate nutrition interventions to combat the problem for these areas: Acute care Outpatient Community

CMS and Order Writing Significant inroads to implement new conditions of participation from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services where hospitals were given the option of allowing dietitians to write diet orders in acute care facilities. The time and effort resulted in a guidance letter from the Texas Department of State Health Services Hospital Licensing. Available shortly. To be shared with your hospital administration Provides the plans to change hospital licensing language to reflect the new conditions of participation.
