PCS PLUS Developing young people to succeed in sport and life POSITIVE COACHING SCOTLAND PCS PLUS Developing young people to succeed in sport and life Promote the value of sport Develop a positive learning environment Support clubs to develop and sustain a positive culture Improve engagement of parents to support a young persons learning journey Improve the quality of coaching

Key Points Re-enforce to the coaches that their role is to ensure that young people learn and develop from sport – because the benefits are enormous Education Physical activity helps children do better at school - those that are more physically fit have improved brain function, higher academic achievement scores and better understanding than less fit children Primary age children who take part in as little as 10 minutes of additional organised physical activity a day, benefit the most by learning better, behaving better in the classroom and performing better academically. Young people who take part in out of school sport have much higher levels of social behaviour and personal and social responsibility than those who do not take part Employment Children today will have 10-14 jobs by the time they are 38 years old The top 10 jobs in 2013 did not even exist in 2008 Almost two-thirds organisations in the UK, stated that school and college leavers have not developed the self-management skills that are required for work. Health The UK's rate of physical activity has declined by 20% in the last 40 years and there will probably be a 35% decline by 2030 UK obesity amongst children has increased by 56% (1994-08) In Scotland 22% children aged 6 years old were overweight or obese and 31% of children had three or more hours screen time on a typical weekday In the last 20 years, children have lost 12 hours of free time a week, and 8 of those lost hours were once spent playing outside. Take time to emphasise the key point – that these results are only achievable if sport is delivered in the correct way – a Mastery environment

DEVELOPING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT POSITIVE COACHING SCOTLAND DEVELOPING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Intentionally set your club culture, ethos and values Set standards and behavioural guidelines Embed a consistent coaching ethos Improve young people physically, socially and psychologically Develop tools and techniques to get the best out of the young people in your club Key Points Explain that this is what PCS is and what is strives to achieve Explain each bullet point and emphasise that PCS is all about supporting young people to achieve their personal best
