Presentation transcript:

Albemarle Sound is a large inland body of generally fresh water in northeastern North Carolina. Albemarle Sound is a vital link in the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. Canals connect the Sound with Chesapeake Bay. Albemarle Sound is 55 miles long, oriented generally east to west, and is from 3.5 to 14 miles wide. Relatively shallow and tideless, Albemarle Sound is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the North Carolina Outer Banks. The Chowan and Roanoke Rivers are the largest of many streams flowing into Albemarle Sound.
