1/10/14 Dialogue 3 TP: Characters reveal themselves through how they speak. Bell work: Look at the picture below. What do you think they are saying?

Thinking Point In any face-to-face communication, three elements come into play: body language, words (what is said) and tone (how it is said) As a percentage of 100, how important do you think each element is? (For example, body language 33 1 3 %, words 33 1 3 % and tone 33 1 3 %) Some research suggests that body language accounts for 55% of the message, tone, 38% and words, only 7%!

X:\Children & Educational Movies Watch the film Up from 10:43 mins. X:\Children & Educational Movies As you are watching, consider the questions below: What do you think is happening in the scene? How are the characters feeling? How do you know this?

Synonym for ‘shouted’. Dogs bark as a sign of aggression, suggests Miss Hardcastle is uncompromising. Examples Miss Hardcastle merely glanced at her secretary before barking out her orders. “I d-d-don’t know what to do. I won’t b-b-be able to do it. I just can’t…” whispered Ellen. Speaking quietly. Suggests Ellen lacks confidence. People also whisper when they don’t want to be heard.

Paired Work Read the Matilda extract again. Fill out the table with the words Roald Dahl uses to describe the way the characters speak. Which character is most animated? What is the reaction of the other two characters? Can you think of any reasons why the writer chose particular words to describe how each character spoke?

Brainstorm as many different synonyms as you can for the word ‘said’ Plenary Brainstorm as many different synonyms as you can for the word ‘said’ Note: try to come up with words that give more information about the way words are spoken.
