Basic Skills Soldering Class Instructor: Ted Markson
Lecture Goals Learn common soldering terminology Become familiar with commonly used tools View demonstrations of common soldering procedures Hands-on assembly with a through-hole kit Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Soldering Applications Connect electrical wiring Populate a PCB Increase a circuit’s or wire’s bandwidth Art Gateway to education Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Component Technologies Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Through Hole (Thru Hole) Leaded (‘lee-did) or Axial components Mostly used for prototyping, or bread-boarding Largest component package dimensions Small pin counts, fastest to assemble Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Surface Mount (SMD or SMT) Sometimes Leaded (‘lee-did) components Used heavily in large production Some of the smallest component dimensions Higher pin counts, can be quick to solder (skill depending) Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Soldering Specifics Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Tip Temperature Common solder alloys (%Tin/%Lead) include: 63/37 melts at 183 Deg. C. 60/40 melts between 183-190 Deg. C. 50/50 melts above 185 Deg. C. Generic lead-free alloys begin melting at 250 Deg. C. Generally use tip temperature of twice the melting target Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Flux Cleans the soldering site Slows oxidation during heating Some prevention of corrosion Magic smoke you see while soldering! Do not inhale directly! Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Tip Size and Shape Common tips include: Conical Chisel Blade Hoof Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Maintain Your Soldering Iron A shiny tip is a clean tip! Never scrape the soldering tip with abrasives Always place solder on the tip before resting or storing Wet the sponge! Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Maintain Your Soldering Iron (cont.) A Procedure! On startup, clean tip with wet sponge or pulled foil Wet tip before resting iron Fling then wet before soldering Wet, fling, clean, then wet before deactivating Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Joints Good mechanical connection when possible Proper heat transfer from iron to target Wet the tip! ‘Cold’ joints Pad stress from re-heating Lifting PCB pads Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
De-Soldering Goals: Pumps versus Wicking Saving the pads Saving the parts Being realistic Pumps versus Wicking Adding solder to remove solder Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Demonstration Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
Soldering From Start To Finish Arranging the work area Ventilation Proper tools for the job Preparing the assembly Clamping Heatsink Preparing the soldering implement A wet tip transfers heat better Common assembly procedures Thru hole components to a board Joining wires. Heatsinking Pigtails Desoldering Assembly inspection Cold joints Lifting Storing tools Basic Skills Soldering Class 11/24/2018
