Going for the Gold with Decimals Chapter 1 Lesson 7 Compare Decimals

Pre-Skills Review Compare these decimals to the hundredths using the symbols <, >, and =. 4.2 ___ 4.20 5.65 ___ 5.56 2.01 ___ 2.10

Essential Question: How does place value help us compare decimals to the thousandths?

I Can….. Understand the value of decimal numbers. Use a number line to compare decimals.

Key Terms Place Value- the value given to a digit by its position in a number. Decimal- a number that has a digit in the tenths place, hundredths place, and/or beyond. Decimal point- a point between a whole number and a decimal fraction. Equivalent decimals- decimals that have the same value.

Mini Lesson You are an Olympic coach for Sanya Richards- Ross. You need to compare Sanya’s fastest sprint times with the other Olympians. Your Challenge: Find out how Sanya’s time compares to the times of the other Olympians. What place does Sanya come in?

Mini Lesson Sanya ran four practice runs to prepare for the Olympics. Her times were: 48.946; 48.832; 49.461; 49.345 Plot each number on the number line below: 48 50 49 When using the number line prompt students to add zeros to the hundredths and thousandths places. These will help students be able to compare the numbers and to see if that the zeros have to no value. Compare the following decimals using <, >, or =. 48.832 _____ 48.946 49.461 _____ 49.345 48.832 _____ 49.345

Mini Lesson Sanya ran her 400 meter race in 48.231 seconds. She raced four other sprinters for the gold. Their times are below: Name Time Allyson Felix 48.532 Diamond Dixon 48.701 Elizabeth Beisel 48.3 La’Shinda Demus 48.232 Compare all sprinters run time to Sanya’s to find who wins gold.
