PHASE III—THE HIGH MIDDLE AGES

JOURNAL QUESTION: People in the past, and even some people today, think that sacraments are “magical.” In what ways are sacraments and magic similar? In what ways are sacraments and magic dissimilar?

THE GREAT SCHISM The Great Schism of 1054 divided the Church into: The Roman Catholic Church Bishop of Rome (the pope) as the head Latin continues as the language of the liturgy The Eastern Orthodox Church Patriarch of Constantinople Greek continues as the language of the liturgy Today the Orthodox Church is not in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church There do exist 22 other “rites” that are in communion with the Roman Catholic Church

SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS—PHASE III In the 13th century the Church officially declared there were SEVEN Sacraments The first emergence of the belief that the Sacraments caused God’s grace to be present Specific guidelines were set out for performing each of the Sacraments

PHASE II-PHASE III 900-1000 A.D. 395 A.D. 1274 A.D. Sacraments are simply “signs of sacred things.” 1274 A.D. There are seven and ONLY seven sacraments in the Catholic Church. 900-1000 A.D. Marriage & Confirmation become “sacraments.”

DANGERS during the High Middle Ages Overemphasis on the “correct form” of the sacraments People put their faith in the performance and lost the true meaning It ignored the disposition of the person receiving the sacrament Sacramental practice led towards a “magical” form of thinking
