Questioning Children (1949) Artist: Karel Appel By: Ingenue

Artist Biography Christian Karel Appel was a Dutch Painter, sculptor, and poet. He started painting at the age of fourteen and studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in the 1940s. He was one of the founders of the avant-garde movement cobra in 1948.

What is it made of? Questioning Children is made of rough wooden pieces painted with gouache.

History Inspiration for this series was his memory of seeing German children begging for food alongside a train.
