In the early 1970s, the British, who occupied Ireland, began a practice known as internment. This allowed them to imprison any Irish citizen suspected of a crime and hold him indefinitely. On January 30, 1972, Irish protesters staged a demonstration to oppose the practice. Though the demonstrators were unarmed, members of the British military opened fire on the crowd.
