Angel Saydh SUMMER PROJECT Angel… -He is in 2nd grade -7 years old -He has Down syndrome -His two middle fingers are together and he has had three surgery to separate them, but he still needs more. SUMMER PROJECT
Angel seats in the right middle row. This is his classroom - Very big Angel seats in the middle therefore instruction is not given to him directly all the time Other students like to hug and pet him, which distracts him Students often provoke him so he gets aggressive Some days he is happy and does all his work, but other days he just lays on his desk and sleeps. He has fits, is angry, and will not cooperate with us most days. MOTIVATIONS: taking breaks (games or flashlight pen), going outside, doing something fun but with academic material (chalk or ball), and lunch time (food) 2nd Grade Classroom Total students: 42 Angel seats in the right middle row.
Raquel Teacher: -No special education background -Did try to help and cared about him Teacher tells him to do a page full of circles Color big drawings like flags which was related to the class work the other students were doing that day. It is hard for her to keep track of Angel with all the other students in the class.
Work given by the teacher. This is an example of what the USAER teacher gave him to work on. USAER teacher: Would give the work, and wouldn’t care to follow up to see how he was doing As you can see Angel didn’t finish his work During the five weeks observing at LGO we never saw the teacher at USAER work with him Played with blocks most of the time in USAER Work given by the teacher.
Orange – Helping him by holding his hand. Green – Angel by himself. This is an example of the work we gave him and how we were there to support him Angel knew where to trace He did finish his work He is motivated knowing that he can do more This shows his potential and how he can do more than just circles. Having him do daily work like this would get him into a routine and would improve all of his skills. One of his biggest problems is that he is not used to doing work at school and he needs to start having adapted grade level assignments on a daily basis. Orange – Helping him by holding his hand. Green – Angel by himself.
June 4th 1 – Showed him how to color 2 – Angel colored by himself Here we showed him how to color inside the lines Angel had a little trouble at first and would only make lines inside the lines like “coloring” On #3 he was able to fill in more easily This shows how Angel’s work looked like at the beginning of our time with him. 1 – Showed him how to color 2 – Angel colored by himself 3 - Helped him on top then colored all by himself June 4th
Top – Angel by himself Bottom – Example by us June 17th After 2 weeks he was able to color inside the lines with a more proper technique, instead of drawing lines. -This shows how Angel can improve by having one on one instruction -This is evidence of how Mexico would benefit by having teacher aids in the classrooms, especially when there is special education students in the class. June 17th Top – Angel by himself Bottom – Example by us
“Copying work” from white board like everyone else in the class. Raquel wrote a paragraph on the board for students to copy on their notebooks Angel followed directions of copying what was on the board Angel wanted to do what his classmates where doing. This is another form of motivation Angel had to do some kind of work instead of just sitting on his desk.
Angel… -Worked well with chalk outside -Felt like play, but he was doing work he would usually be doing in his notebook. -One day…. inside the classroom Angel did not want to do anything on his notebook. So we went outside and…. -With chalk in the floor Angel was able to draw a perfect smilie face -Drew squares to make bebeleche (practiced drawing straight lines). -Practiced his coordination while jumping on one foot -Practiced counting up to ten, because every time he jumped he would say the number he was on (counting) He did work better than he would do in his notebook.
