All About Plot Holowicki

PLOT The plot of a story is made up of the chain of events that happen in the story. Let’s take a look at the different parts of plot.

Exposition The exposition of the story is the very beginning part of the story. It is when we first begin to read and understand a little bit about who the characters are and where the story is taking place.

Conflict The conflict of a story is the main problem the main character (or main characters) face in a story. There may be other struggles throughout the story, but usually they all revolve around this one big conflict.

Rising Action The Rising Action in a story is made up of events that build on one another. As we read about these events, we become more and more excited to read on. (The events become more tense.)

Climax The climax of the story is the moment in the story when it is the most tense or exciting. When this event happens you know things will never be the same. It is the turning point in the story, and usually a big piece of action happens here. (It is the top of the hill on the roller-coaster.)

Falling Action The falling action of a story is when the events begin to unwind and settle down. (Think of falling action as coming down the hill of a roller-coaster.)

Resolution The resolution of the story is how everything ends up in the story. It typically occurs at the very end of the story. (Remember, the resolution of a story is not always positive.)
