Year 9 Subject Selection – ITALIAN

Course Description The focus of the course is experiencing and using Italian in realistic situations. Students are introduced to Italian culture and its influence on western civilisation is studied. They are able to connect the language to their own culture and that of Italy. Multimedia and information technology interactive resources are also integrated into the course

Why Study this? Work and Assessment Tasks Work tasks aim to cover reading, writing, speaking and listening skills weekly. They take a variety of forms to ensure each topic is investigated in ways to suit different learners. Assessment tasks aim to assess both grammatical and cultural knowledge and skills, expressed through various text and media forms.

HAVING COMPETENCE IN A LANGUAGE MAKES YOU THAT MUCH MORE EMPLOYABLE. Subject pathway…. Knowledge in the field of Italian language and culture is beneficial to hold in Australian business. Roles such as customer relations, translating (from documents to diplomatic congresses), representation of businesses overseas and teaching are just some potential prospects. Specifically: As a result of Italian migration in the 40s and 50s, Italian culture plays an ongoing role in influencing Australian society. The world continues to look to Italy and is influenced by its culture, both of the past and of today. Economically, Italy exports machinery and other manufactured goods such as textiles, clothing and food to Australia. In return, Australia exports wool, leather, coal, cotton and iron ore to Italy. A number of Italian companies synonymous with quality food, clothing and cars are established in Australia. Studying Italian also provides the background for further studies of languages such as French, Spanish and Portuguese. Being successful in your study of a language in your senior years of schooling may provide you with a higher chance of being accepted into the university/further education course of your choice. HAVING COMPETENCE IN A LANGUAGE MAKES YOU THAT MUCH MORE EMPLOYABLE.

Extra activities/costs? In December 2017, Nagle will be running an Italy trip where students will be able to see their knowledge and skills come to fruition. To attend students MUST undertake Italian. Each year, the Italian Cultural Day is a highlight for Italian students, where they are involved in cultural activities and performances.
