5th Grade Tybee Trip Informational Meeting August 25, 2016

Trip Overview Where are we going? Tybee Island, Georgia When: March 6-8, 2017

What will the students do? Learn! Students will be in classes all day, and will study science from a hands-on perspective All activities and projects that students will participate in, from morning to night, will be directly related to 5th grade standards

Fundraising for the Trip Krispy Kreme Doughnut Sales When: starts in early September Each box sold by your child gives them credit toward their trip cost. *Credit amount depends on the total number of boxes sold through the whole school (around $2)

Accommodations There are bunk-style cabins on site, each with its own bathroom. Adult chaperones will be in each cabin. Boys and Girls will be separated. Bunk assignments will be given by teachers.

Food Cafeteria-style dining We will inform the camp of all known food allergies, and accommodations will be made for these students. **Canteen shop sells snacks too!

Estimated Travel Times We will depart GSES very early on March 6th so we can arrive at Tybee Island by lunchtime. We will return the afternoon of March 8th. Students will need to have someone bring them, and pick them up. School buses will not be running at those times. Specific times will be given closer to the date of the trip.

Chaperones Interested? Return the chaperone form to let us know. After students are signed up, we will select chaperones according to need (male vs. female) Selections will be done by teachers and administration through a lottery, with final approval made by Mrs. Hanley. Cost for chaperones: $225

Contacting the students Camp Rule: No students will be allowed to have any electronics, including cell phones (reception is very poor anyway). There will be no designated call home times. Students will be in class from morning to night! We will only call if there is a problem. No news is good news. The camp has one main phone line so if you must reach us due to emergency, this is possible.

The Do’s and Not to Do’s A very detailed list will be given prior to the trip concerning packing rules, and needed items. Thinking ahead: Rubber boots, jackets, two pairs of tennis shoes, hats, sleeping bag

What if my child does not go? That decision will be up to the parents. Students not participating in this trip will be expected to attend school just like a regular day, or will receive unexcused absences. Standards-based work will be given to these students. The classroom setting will be determined according to the needs of the grade level.

Parents, The best part of all… Is that your child will be doing CHORES while they are staying on Tybee Island. That means that when your child returns home, they will know how to make their beds, clean their room, do the dishes, and sweep the floor. So they can do it all for you!
