Emotional Intelligence “ a set of emotional and social skills that influence the way we perceive and express ourselves, develop and maintain social relationships, cope with challenges, and use emotional information in an effective and meaningful way.” Source: MHS

Key Indicator of Human Performance While emotional intelligence isn’t the sole predictor of human performance and development potential, it is proven to be a key indicator in these areas.

Evolves Over Time with Intentionality Emotional intelligence is also not a static factor. To the contrary, one’s emotional intelligence can change over time and can be developed in targeted areas.

Contextual Measurement Measures the interaction between a person and their environment of operation.

Social and Organizational Context

Case Study # 1 CULTURE: Command and Control One perspective matters No teaming Zinger rich Silo rich STRATEGIC INITIATIVE: Develop potential internal CEO candidates Four internals What needs to be coached? Teaming is necessary Coaching of the individual is helpful - not enough

Self-Reporting Bias

Value As a screening tool in hiring, leading to the selection of emotionally intelligent, emotionally healthy, and the most-likely successful employees. Supplemented by other sources of information, such as interviews, can make the recruitment and selection process more reliable and efficient. A sound recruiting process leads to higher retention rates and reduced turnover which can result in significant cost savings, improved employee effectiveness, and increased morale.

Case Study # 2: CEO Succession Internal Candidate (97) External Candidate (130) What do you notice? What has been the focus of each candidate?

Coordinate - Prepare - Develop - Execute “ … not just what it means to be an effective leader, but how well they can coordinate, how well they can prepare, how well they can develop ideas and assessments of operational situations—and ultimately what strategies can be employed to address those situations.” Steve Elkins, DCCU

“ . . . helped us to tap into a broader base of strategic thinking.” Cross Functional EI “ . . . helped us to tap into a broader base of strategic thinking.”
