Extemporaneous Vs. Impromptu Speaking Chapter 15 BY: Jaelene Tatum, Khristina Beasley, Fancie Ingram, Brooklyn Childs, Kendall Foster 5th Hour 9/15/17

Learning Objectives After completing this chapter you will be able to do the following… Define both extemporaneous and impromptu speaking Describe the difference between extemporaneous speaking and impromptu speaking Deliver both types of speech

Extemporaneous Speaking is… Prepared carefully and practiced in advance While delivering a speech you rely on notes or on an outline Use key words or phrases to remind you of important ideas

Preparing for Extemporaneous Speaking Steps… Compelling insight introduction informs the listeners on something they do not know. Connect your intro to the rest of your speech. Have it flow into the main topic. Be Topic Specific in the body paragraphs. In the concluding statement, have a zinger which will give your speech a powerful reminder of the importance of your speech.

Impromptu Speaking “Speaking Off-the-Cuff” Impromptu speaking is generally defined as talking with little or no preparation. The statement of your main point should be a short introduction to the main idea. Supported with reasons, examples, illustration, statics etc.. Conclusion needs to be brief MOST IMPORTANTLY rely on your FIRST thoughts.

Don’t Panic!!! Worst mistake in an impromptu speech is to panic. You should minimize your concerns by reading widely and by being a good observer and listener. Remember your audience is always aware that you’re speaking off-the-cuff and will adjust its expectations

Developing A Natural Style To have an effective extemporaneous and impromptu speech is to develop a conversational quality. Conversational quality means to sound spontaneous to an audience and to engage in conversation. Also, using justification on certain words you use in your speech will help the audience to get an explanation on what you are speaking of.
