Chemistry. Describing Matter  Matter – anything that has a mass and takes up space. Air, plastic, metal wood, glass, paper, and water are all matter.
Properties of Matter All forms of matter have properties.
List 3 Examples of Matter: 1. Solids- definite shape and volume 2. Liquids- definite volume, no definite shape 3. Gases – No definite shape, no definite.
Introduction to Matter
Matter:. Properties of Matter: What is Matter? Matter is defined as anything that has mass and takes up space. Can you give an example of matter??
Matter and Properties Big idea: Atoms are building blocks of matter, all substances have specific properties, and matter can be a pure substance or a mixture.
Why does AIR have matter? Observe Matter Questions  Was anything in the cup besides the paper? If so, what was it?  Feel the paper towel, is it dry.

MATTER & ITS PROPERTIES NOTESHEET

1. MATTER: Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

LET’S DISCOVER PROPERTIES OF MATTER: Qualities or traits belonging to an individual or thing. LET’S DISCOVER PROPERTIES OF MATTER: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/matter/properties-of-matter.htm

3. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES: . Physical properties are any properties of matter which can be observed without changing the chemical identity.

4. EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES INCLUDE: 1. The color of a shirt 2. The weight of a bowling ball 3. The length of a football field.

5. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES: Any characteristic that gives a substance the ability to undergo a change that results in a new substance

6. EXAMPLES OF CHEMICAL CHANGE: A. Toxicity B. Oxidation C. Flammability

7. CHEMICAL OR PHYSICAL? A. CHEMICAL B. PHYSICAL C. PHYSICAL D. CHEMICAL E. PHYSICAL F. PHYSICAL G. CHEMICAL H. CHEMICAL

8. STATES OF MATTER: THE 3 MAIN STATES OF MATTER ARE: SOLID, LIQUID AND GAS. Let’s have a look at the differing states of matter: http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/matter/solids-liquids-gases.htm

9. WHICH STATE OF MATTER: A. GAS B. SOLID C. LIQUID

10. Name 3 things that are solids: EXAMPLES: wood, car, concrete, brick, chair and table

11. Name 3 things that are liquids: EXAMPLES: water, milk, orange juice, gasoline and soda

12. Name 3 things that are gases: EXAMPLES: Helium, water vapor, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide

USE THIS FORMULA TO FIND DENSITY: A physical property of matter. The mass per unit volume of a substance at a particular temperature and pressure. USE THIS FORMULA TO FIND DENSITY: D=m/v

14. What is the 4th phase of matter? PLASMA

Lightning, solar wind, stars and the tail of a comet 15. Examples of Plasma: Lightning, solar wind, stars and the tail of a comet

16. Physical Changes Any characteristic of a material that can be observed or measured without changing the identity of the material

17. Examples of Physical Changes Bending a piece of plastic that snaps back into shape. A chocolate bar melts. A tree is cut up to be used as firewood. A t-shirt shrinks in the dryer. You gained ten pounds.

18. Chemical Change: A change in the identity of a substance due to the chemical properties in that substance.

19. Examples of a chemical change: Eating a sandwich Rust on metal Wood burning

PHYSICAL VS. CHEMICAL CHANGES VIDEO: http://www.learn360.com/ShowVideo.aspx?lid=6818736&SearchText=chemical+and+physical+change&ID=138912

20. Six Phases of Matter Condensation, evaporation, sublimation, deposition, freezing, and melting

21. Condensation is the conversion of a vapor or gas to a liquid. Example: Water molecules in the air as a vapor hit the colder surface of the can and turn into liquid water

22. Evaporation is the process of a substance in a liquid state changing to a gaseous state due to an increase in temperature and/or pressure. Evaporation is a fundamental part of the water cycle and is constantly occurring throughout nature.

23. Sublimation is a chemical process where a solid turns into a gas without going through a liquid stage. Example: When ice cubes shrink in the freezer.

24. Deposition is a process where a gas changes phase and turns directly in solid without passing through the liquid phase. Example: Snow that forms in clouds. The water vapor changes directly to ice without first becoming a liquid.

25. Melting point is the temperature at which a solid and liquid phase may coexist in equilibrium (the same amount).

26. Freezing point is almost always an exothermic process, meaning that as liquid changes into solid, where heat and pressure is released.
