1 Samuel: King Saul’s Demise

Saul’s Jealousy of David 1 Samuel 18:6-16 Saul becomes jealous of David’s popularity with the people. This is a sure sign of Saul’s rejection as King. Saul gives David his daughter, Michal, as a sign of loyalty (1 Sam. 18:17-30)

Saul Seeks Kill David/Jonathan Protects David 1 Samuel 19-20 To rid himself of the problem, Saul seeks to kill David. Jonathan goes to David and protects him from Saul’s wrath by an interesting tactic

David flees 1 Samuel 21:10-12; 1 Samuel 22 David goes to Gath where he acts crazy in order that the King of Gath will not turn him over to Saul. This is the background of David’s writing of Psalm 34 David flees to a cave of Adullam. 1 Samuel 22:1-5 Adullam may have been a city of refuge This is the background of Psalm 57

Saul Goes Crazy Kills the priests at Nob because he thinks they have turned on him. One of the king’s son, Ahitub, flees and tells David all of what happens. David protects Ahitub.

David Spares Saul’s Life 1 Samuel 24 Saul goes to the bathroom in a cave where David is hiding. David has an opportunity to kill Saul. 1 Samuel 24: 4-7 David does not kill Saul, because he is still King of Israel and he dare not touch the LORD’s anointed. Leadership lesson: You cannot force yourself into leadership positions. You must wait on the LORD, grow into the LORD, and lead with the LORD

Saul goes to the Medium at En-Dor In 1 Samuel 25, Samuel has died. The Philistines are again causing problems for Saul. Saul expelled mediums and necromancers (those who you conjure and talk to the dead) in the land of Israel. Saul becomes afraid of the Philistine army. He inquires of the LORD, the LORD does not answer him.

1Samuel 28 Saul disguises himself and goes to the medium at En-Dor. The medium is afraid that she will be put to death from the LORD. Saul assures her that no punishment will happen. Saul has the medium summon Samuel.
