SOCIAL STUDIES GRADE FIVE – THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION Patriots vs. Loyalists Advantages/ Disadvantages of Combatants The American Revolution French and Indian War Content Vocabulary: revolution patriot loyalist allies taxes Proclamation of 1763 Stamp Act Townshend Acts Declaration of Independence loyal revolt Boston Massacre Boston Tea Party Intolerable Acts treaty Treaty of Paris Effects Road to Revolution Fighting the War Rights of Englishmen British Policy Leaders Declaration of Independence Causes of the war Taxes Treaty of Paris Trade Essential Learning Concepts: The French and Indian War led to greater British power in the colonies and a smaller need for the colonists to have the protection of the British. The colonists revolted against the British because of increased British attention to the colonies, increased taxes, issues with trade, and increased tension between the colonists and the British government and army. The Declaration of Independence stated unifying ideas of American democracy. Many people played important roles as government leaders, military leaders, and diplomats to lead the colonies to victory during the American Revolution. Some colonists were loyal to Britain during the American Revolution. European countries came to the aid of the colonies during the American Revolution and helped the colonists gain victory.
