On-Demand Writing Tips S.P.A.M. Situation Purpose Audience Mode

Give me 3! 3 Big Ideas 3 Paragraphs of Support (Argument or Informational) What about for Narrative writing?

Give me 3! 3 Forms of Explanation Expert Authority Example Experience

Give me 3! 3 Transitional Words or Phrases Don’t limit transitions to words like “first, second, third” Choose 3 that you feel comfortable using in ANY On-Demand situation

Give me 3! 3 Short Sentences Choose 3 “sound bytes” Then write 3 SHORT (5 words or less) but COMPLETE sentences at key points. Readers will remember a sound byte!

On-Demand Tips Hook your reader! Tell a story Cite quotation Share personal experience

On-Demand Tips Establish need! Why is a change necessary (or dangerous)? Why is your information so important? What’s in it for the audience? Why should they listen to you? What are some impressive facts, examples, or incidents to prove a need?

On-Demand Tips Satisfy Need! Explain what you want the audience to know, do, or believe as a result of your words. Show how your ideas meet the need. Offer facts, expert opinions, examples, and experiences to support your ideas. Recognize and refute any expected opposition to your ideas or your information.

On-Demand Tips Visualize Results! Describe the positive outcomes and good results if your ideas are used. Describe the negative conditions that may result if your ideas are not accepted. Paint a word picture to contrast the possible good results with possible bad results.

On-Demand Tips Call to Action! Challenge (but don’t threaten) audience to accept our information or your stand. Urge audience to think or act just as you have suggested. Tell audience WHY they need to remember your words. Show audience what’s in it for them if they do act on what you have said.
