Colonization of North America Started by a Mistake?

Spain England Origins vs Catholic King Philip II England Protestant Queen Elizabeth I vs King Philip of Spain wants a Catholic on the throne in England. Controls the seas with the Spanish Armada. Francis Drake & the Sea Dogs attack and defeat the big, bad, Spanish Armada. Spain loses control of the seas. Opens the way for England to settle in the New World.

England Colonizes America “New England” colonies Brought New: Religion – Protestant Christianity Language – English Government Ideas – Limited (Eventually) Cultural Practices

Spain Colonizes Mexico Brought New: Religion – Roman Catholicism Christianity New Language – Spanish Government Ideas – Limited (Eventually) Cultural Practices

New Spain Spain controlled most of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central & South America. They were determined to keep out Europeans. The Spanish established Santa Fe & San Antonio. Their goal was to protect the area between French territory & Mexico. Spaniards moved into California setting up missions. They attempted to convert the Native Americans to Christianity & forced them to work the land. European rivalries followed settlers across the Atlantic.
