Resume & LinkedIn Workshop Tashajara Stenvall, Recruiter @ Brooksource

Who is Brooksource? Brooksource Technical Youth is a Technical Consulting firm in Seattle We help companies in Seattle find their entry level talent

Agenda Building your brand Resumes LinkedIn Practice

Building your brand What interests you? What are your accomplishments? Understand what makes unique What are you passionate about? Why do you stand out? How do you want to be perceived? Don’t forget your personality

What sets you apart? Internships Coursework Extra curriculars School projects Personal projects Willingness to learn Technical aptitude Passion for your craft As your going through your job search, don’t forget what sets you apart as a candidate. Now that you have your “personal brand” showcase it everywhere! Your resume, your LinkedIn, in interviews, everywhere!

Resume Big picture Career objective Overall story of the resume Now that we’ve figured out your purpose and what sets you apart, we need to put this message everywhere – starting with your resume.

Resume Content Specific to the job Metrics, data driven It’s okay to brag, but be honest More projects, less irrelevant jobs/experiences (i.e. Sandwich Artist) Big Picture – Technologies Used Specific courses If you put something on your resume, expect to be asked about it

Resume Visual Order is important! Easy to pick out the main points Career Objective Technical skills Relevant projects Experience Education The average recruiter spends 6 second viewing a resume. Can you easily find education, experience and skills?

Resume – The basics Formatting Keep it consistent Times New Roman, 12 point Bold/Italics okay, Contact info Name, email, phone number, LinkedIn Optional location You are going into tech, which is a little more serious. If you were going to be entering the workforce as a designer, or UX developer, I would be saying the exact opposite.

Why LinkedIn? 95% of recruiters use LinkedIn to vet candidates Keeping your profile up to date in your LinkedIn profile makes you 18 times more likely to be found in searches by recruiter Raise of hands, who here has LinkedIn? Ok, of those, who feels like your LinkedIn has been helpful?

LinkedIn Profile Picture Summary Statement Experience Education Now that we’ve done your resume, we’re basically just going to add all that juicy info into your LinkedIn and slap a picture on top of it.

LinkedIn Etiquette Responding to InMail Checking/Updating Your Profile Posting/Sharing Connection Requests Networking is half the battle when you’re finding a job. Building your network. Stay positive.

Tips for using LinkedIn Send InMails between 8-10 AM on weekdays Referencing a former employer in common increases your chances of getting an InMail response by 27% Your bio should include your location Join industry groups  Inmail messages sent on Saturday are 16% less likely to get a response This goes for common schools too. “If you want to work in Silicon Valley and live in Kansas, change your location to Silicon Valley on LinkedIn. Recruiters search zip codes.” It’s a tremendous way to get smart about an industry and get on a recruiter’s radar.”

Final Reminders Create a lasting impression Preparation will pay off Stay fabulous
