Bell work 9/6 Put your name at the top of your paper. Fold your paper in half. On the back draw a line down the center where you folded. On the left side draw a circle map with “physical geography” in the center circle. On the right side number 1-2 with space to write sentences for each one. With your table group at a level 1 define ‘physical geography’ in your circle map. When you are finished turn in your Cornell Notes from last week if you forgot to turn them in.

What are physical features? Landforms, bodies of water, climate, natural vegetation and soil of the earth

Mountain Land with steep sides that rises sharply (1,000 feet or more) from surrounding land; generally larger and more rugged than a hill

Plain Area of level land, usually at low elevation and often covered with grasses

River Large natural stream of water that runs through the land

Lake A sizeable inland body of water

Rainforest A tropical forest, usually of tall, densely growing, broad-leaved evergreen trees in an area of high annual rainfall

highland Elevated land area such as a hill, mountain, or plateau

Ocean One of the five major bodies of salt water that surround the continents

Sea Large body of water completely or partly surrounded by land

plateau Area of flat or rolling land at a high elevation, about 300-3,000 feet high

strait Narrow stretch of water joining two larger bodies of water

Ice shelf A thick mass of ice that is permanently attached to the land but projects into and floats on the sea

peninsula Body of land jutting into a lake or ocean, surrounded on three sides by water

desert A region so arid because of little rainfall that it supports only sparse and widely spaced vegetation or no vegetation at all

valley Area of low land between hills or mountains

tundra One of the vast, nearly level, treeless plains of the arctic regions

Gulf Part of a large body of water that extends into a shoreline, generally larger and more deeply indented than a bay
