Why study history

Why study history? History is an important subject. It can be difficult to understand why it is important to study history. The reasons are complex. http://www.mmiweb.org.uk/hull/201415/201314_images/history11.jpg

The study of history in the past A long time ago, if people knew about history, it was a sign that they were educated. In the past, history class usually meant memorizing facts and dates. http://mostateteachers.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83494ed8153ef0134887d0610970c-500wi

History is more than facts and dates! In Canadian schools today, we learn about history. We learn more than facts and dates. We also learn about why things have happened in the past and what can be learned from past events. Learning about history helps us to understand who we are.

History helps us to understand people and societies We look at history to see how people have behaved in the past. We look at history when we want to learn something new. We can learn from past mistakes We can also learn from past success. We look at history so that we can make sense of how our society works and how other societies work.

History helps us to understand change and how the society we live in came to be. Changes happen for reasons. Most historical events are caused by several different factors. When these factors come together, change happens and the effects of this change can affect people for a long, long time into the future. change Effects of change factors

Studying history is important for good citizenship What are ‘good citizens’? People who care about their countries People who care about other people who live in their countries People who make responsible choices so that they don’t hurt other people

Some things you can learn about in history class: what is important to the people of a country (values) how countries interact with other countries what events have happened in a country the causes of events that have happened in a country the effects of events that have happened in a country who are the people who make up the country what good citizenship looks like what good citizenship does not look like

Learning history helps to develop important skills: To become a critical thinker – not just to memorize information, but to think about what you are learning and to ask questions (why, how, etc.) To be able to look at different sources of information and to learn from these sources. To be able to look at information that shows different views about an issue. Sometimes information will show views that conflict (don’t agree). History teaches us to look from different perspectives. To be able to look at change and to understand HOW and WHY things happen

History is useful in the workplace If you learn history, you are developing skills that will help you in many different careers, such as: Business Politics Museums Media Public relations Law Research Government & public administration Education Tourism ***And any job that requires reading, writing, speaking , listening, assessing, and evaluating
