1619: The year that made Jamestown The first colonial representative government, the Virginia House of Burgesses, is created (REGENTS TIP: REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY and SELF GOVERNMENT) A Dutch ship exchanges his cargo of 20 African men for food. Although treated like indentured servants, these men are the FIRST SLAVES brought to the colonies In 1612, John Rolfe (Pocahontas’ husband) introduced tobacco to Jamestown-by 1619 it was considered extremely profitable (BROWN GOLD)

Other colonies soon followed… Besides the desire to start a new life, and a chance for economic prosperity, others came to America for… RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Puritans… Puritans were part of the Anglican church of England. Upset with the way the church was being run, they wanted to REFORM the Church.

…Pilgrims… A group of Puritans that lost faith in trying to reform the church. They faced religious discrimination in England Wanted to leave the country and start their own society

…PLYMOUTH! In 1620, the ship the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth, where the first New England colony would be set up.

*THE MAYFLOWER COMPACT* (1620) On board the MAYFLOWER, this document was created which set up a basis for the government in the colony. *It was an example of REPRESENTATIVE/SELF GOVERNMENT and DEMOCRACY in the colonies.
