This photo was taken in 1904 in the Congo in Africa during its age of imperialism. The imperialist power controlling this movement was Europe. The imperial motives behind there efforts was an intense economic competition for the regions raw materials and markets to sell these goods. Europe also has a large amount of national pride and racism. Furthermore, the believed in Social Darwinism. Moreover, they wanted to Christianize and civilize non-Europeans. Before this photo was taken, the wars between competing tribes was all the South Africans had to worry about. They all had their own customs, traditions, and practices. During this photo, the natives were used to perform the strenuous and very laborious jobs so that the British could exploit the Africans, and use their natural recourses. And, as seen in the photo above, if a worker didn’t complete the task in a manner in which the British approved, their hand was cut off. After this photo was taken, the conditions in which the Africans got better, but not by much. This being a result of there still being a great need for their natural resources and a lack of knowledge on the extremity of the conditions.
